Meriel is a Professor of Equine Science, BSc PhD, BHSII, RAnim Sci. at Hartpury University, and is currently the Chair of the European Workshop on Equine Nutrition Association (EWENA). She has been an academic and active researcher or 30+ years, publishing 150+ academic articles and conference presentations.

Equine Nutrition has always been a passion. Her primary interests include fundamental digestive physiology and development of novel feeds and feeding systems for horses. Meriel has always favored working on the ‘real-life issues’ facing our equine industry and over the last 10 years improving digestive and respiratory health through better feeding systems and reducing dust in the stable environment have been her major focus. Her work has included the manipulation of forage type and hygienic quality to reduce the digestive and allergenic burden and improve the health of stabled horses.

Meriel is passionate about knowledge exchange and disseminating the results of research to the end-user. She is an enthusiastic and engaging presenter and being an accomplished horsewoman herself is always able to translate complex issues to the horse owner. Meriel has worked with numerous UK and European feed companies, putting the science behind many of their products and systems, all with an aim of improving the health and welfare of horses.
